Who is leaving OpenAI?
OpenAI on Tuesday reposted a post by their CEO, Sam Altman, saying Ilya and OpenAI are going to part ways, which is very sad. IIya is leaving OpenAI because of a personal project; he didn’t give more details about it and is set to do so in due time.
Sam said that “OpenAI would not be what it is without him, that Ilya is easily one of the greatest minds of our generation, a guiding light of our field, and a dear friend. His brilliance and vision are well known; his warmth and compassion are less well known but no less important.”
Ilya Sutskever said in a post, “After almost a decade, I have made the decision to leave OpenAI. The company’s trajectory has been nothing short of miraculous, and I’m confident that OpenAI will build AGI that is both safe and beneficial under the leadership of @sama, @gdb, @miramurati and now, under the excellent research leadership of @merettm. It was an honor and a privilege to have worked together, and I will miss everyone dearly. So long, and thanks for everything. I am excited for what comes next — a project that is very personally meaningful to me about which I will share details in due time.”
Who is replacing Ilya?
According to Sam, Jakub is going to be the new Chief Scientist. He went further to say that Jakub is also easily one of the greatest minds of our generation; I am thrilled he is taking the baton here. He has run many of our most important projects, and I am very confident he will lead us to make rapid and safe progress towards our mission of ensuring that AGI benefits everyone.
Jeff Dean, the Chief Scientist at Google DeepMind and Google Research Co-Designer/implementor of things like @TensorFlow, MapReduce, Bigtable, Spanner, and Gemini, commented under the IIYA post, wishing him luck for the next things to come.
“Ilya, best of luck in all that comes next for you. I was pleased to call you a colleague for many years, and I’ve admired everything you’ve accomplished at OpenAI. I always enjoy when our paths cross (even if just for coffee),” IIya said.

On Monday OpenAI announced the introduction of a new model GPT 4o, that can reason across audio, vision, and text in real time. The announcement came a few days after the company said in a post on X that it would go live on Monday to show ChatGPT and GPT-4 updates.
